When I first found this site, I was leary. I was not sure if it was infested with hateful research Nazis that's soul enjoyment would come from insulting newbies. I cautiously sent a brief e-mail of my stories to Watch 1 (Mike). He posted them and I did not check back on it after a time or two. I recently decided to stick my neck out and check out the ABRF again. I have found that the members are smart funny people who are willing to share their knowledge. So, I've decided to post my missed sighting encounter.

I must have been twelve or thirteen because my grandmother had started giving me (bleep) about playing outside with the boys, especially after dark. She had paid the power company to have a light put on the power pole across the road from her house. My grandmother's house was on a small hill and a dirt road was between the power pole and the bank of my grandmother's hill. There were few families on the road, it was mostly woods on both sides. The few kids living there were related either closely or distantly. We spent our days in the woods and our nights playing hide and go seek in the dark or ball under the street light. On this particular night we had been playing ball. Though we had spent some time throwing rocks in the air around the street light. The rocks would start to fall and the bats, which were hanging out around the light for their meals, would zone in on the rock and follow it down. Often times, to get knocked out of the air by a kid with a stick. We had stopped playing and I had gone in the house for something, probably something to drink. I came back out of the house and was walking across the front yard, which was only partly light by the street light. I got almost to the bank of the hill when I saw my brother and cousin staring at me with that, "Oh Crap, " look. I could tell they were not just looking at me, but slightly past me. I froze! My ears perked up. I needed to know what was behind me. The only thing I heard was something going through the weeds and brush off to my left. I snatched my head around to see what it was but I did not see anything. I heard it going through the woods on the other side of the dirt road. When I looked back at the boys they were rushing past me and into the house. I took off right behind them, yelling, "what was it."

My brother and cousin said they had turned to look at me and saw a large creature on two legs walking behind me. They said it was covered in fur and it was dark in color. My brother said he thought it was a werewolf...lol. My grandmother was convinced it was similar to what had followed her home from work when she was a young lady. Needless to say, we stayed close to home for a couple of days and did not play after dark for a while. We did sit on the porch hoping to see it come out of the woods again. I felt cheated that I did not get to see it. I could have been eaten by a booger bear and I didn't even get to see it....lol.

After thought: To be honest, I don't recall a smell. I just remember being so afraid that something was behind me and then taking off when I heard it crashing through the woods.

Scary story. I agree that it's very disappointing that you didn't get to see it. At the time, I probably wouldn't have cared (lol), but afterwards, I would be upset/mad that I didn't get to see it too. Do you ever talk to your brother and cousin about it or have they forgotten the encounter?

Thanks!

Terrific story and I have to ask.  Have you been back to the same area recently?  What would be really interesting is for all three of you to go back and retrace the steps.  You might be able to get an idea for the height of the SF.

I have asked my little sis and bro if they would want to go back to the encounter area, bro said "yes, in a heartbeat" but sis not so much.:P

I don't speak to the cousin any more, he's taken a path in life that keeps him in jail. My brother and I have talked about it but not for years.

The area has totally changed. There are a lot of people living down there now. My grandmother's old house was abandoned years ago and has fallen in on it's self. Before that my mother had the hill leveled out. I hate going back because it's not home anymore. I don't talk to my cousin, as I said he spends all of his time in jail. I see my brother some but we aren't close anymore. The three of us grew up, took different paths, and the land changed. Now when I go back on the old road it's like another world.

About area changes.

Things are always changing. Not all the changes are to the disadvantage of the wildlife and Bigfoot. Places that use to be clear pastures and fields are now forest lands. As the family farm slowly becomes a thing of the past (I hope this doesn't happen and hope we soon see a return of many small farms) the land use has changed also.

Small areas that were once used for one purpose are now over grown and wild and may offer ideal terrain for wildlife and Bigfoot. Some of these areas could very well be within the city limits of some cities.

We discussed this before but if there are "avenues" of approach from larger forested areas, and if wildlife can travel into these small areas without being seen, why can't a Bigfoot do the same thing?

Just something to think about. They might be hiding ..in plain sight.

i agree mike and would go as far to endorse clear cutting...clear cutting is a boon to wild life and isnt near as bad as what some have led us to believe...silt washing into trout streams is a problem but nothing in comparison to daming up the river..many booger sightings have occured around  clear cutting and for good reason...wildlife populations rise-not decline and this area becomes an increased food plot thanks to the logging companies...give the forest 25 years and its all back to what it was before....

The only big problem I have with clear cutting is that the land owners cut everything and then re-plant in pine only ..in most cases. The oaks are slow growing but they provide the acorns for the deer, squirrels and many other wildlife.

The time of the year that the cutting occurs can wipe out many young birds and animals.

Most timber companies don't look at any type of cutting that will have the less impact on the wildlife. They look more at the bottom line and the dollar mark.

This will not change until all are forced to conform with the passing of laws. I hate more control forced on anyone. It is real hard for one company to cut timber with less impact while others continue to cut for high profit.
Those that would love to cut eco friendly can not afford too.

You said it well, Mike.  The problem that I see with clear cutting is that it destroys the mast crop (acorns) that most  wildlife needs for food. Not too many species can subsist on only pine nuts. I just always hate to see anyone cut a grown oak tree. It takes them so long to reach maturity. I wish that everyone that cuts timber would select cut---but, as you stated---most are lookin at dollars--not land management.----TnC------

Clear-cutting is very good for wildlife at first ,but as Mike said they replant with pine, seems like for a few years the pines just sit there, then it seems they grow three to four ft tall in year and start drowning out the native plants which really why the wildlife is there.but I have learned the booger doesnt mind the pine plantations.very good cover and good ambush spots for wildlife passing thru. For the hunters pay attention this winter around food plots to see if you find small trees llike pine or sweetgum pushed over parallel to the trails coming to the food plots we have find several areas like that, i believe is a ambush spot.                 PLOWBOY

Welcome Gena!!!  Great story.  I think you will find, as I have, that this site is populated with some of the friendliest people around.

It has, for me, become like a second home.

Thanks for the Welcome everyone. Even though I'm new and I don't know as much about BF as Bear's big toe, I already feel like I've made some friends.
