I would like to hear what others think about all the new lights that have been produced in the last few years. What lights do you think produce the best eyeshine and seem to not scare/spook the animals?

Do you think Bigfoot can detect IR (Infra-red)?

Here is one place to go to find a lot of info about lights/flashligths:
http://candlepowerforums.com/

Let me hear your ideas.

I don't think BF can see infra red - I think he see's the camera!  In UV light they stick out like sore thumbs.  Since all the other little forest critters see in the UV - it only makes sense that BF would be able to also.

That being said - and I know Grumpy and I are the only voices on this in the entire BF world - but we are right - get a cheap black light from Wal-mart ($9) and take all your gear into the bathroom (usually the darkest room in the house) turn that thing on and watch all your hunting gear and game camera's lite up like the Christmas tree in front of Macy's.

Go back to Wal-mart - and buy some blue painters tape - and some flat back or camo paint.  Cover up the sensor and lens of your game cam - and paint that bad boy. Redo the experiment - and suddenly now it does not glow. (Let the paint dry first..lol)

Than go here http://www.atsko.com/ and buy the UV killer package.  Follow the instructions and again redo the experiment - suddenly your hunting camo does not glow....Hmmmmm

Grumpy and I are both firm believers in this.  We have tried to tell the world, but it seems to always fall on deaf ears.   In the UV spectrum - your camo can be seen for at least 200 yards - advantage is not yours...lol  My blue jeans light up like an airport landing becon...... probably see them for a mile!

IR - no - UV - YES

I have a UV light and have looked at my hunting camo with it. Like you say, it glows like a neon light in the dark. The old style army BDUs and the desert night-time camo are the best for not glowing. The folks that make the camo clothing have UV brightners added to help keep the camo pattern from fading. I have to wonder it the companies know about deer and other critters being able to see UV.
Here you have the hunters buying the new patterns that really look good to the hunters and they might as well have a glowing sign that says "Hunter in the area". The deer keep spotting the hunters and running off and the hunters keep buying what they think is better camo in hopes the deer won't spot them.

There is still some speculation that Bigfoot can see IR and it may be possible that it can see some into the IR range. Someone suggested we catch one and give it an eye test and find out..LOL. That might take awhile.
This is all very interesting and we don't have enough info to make a call either way.
I am beginning to think the slow responce time on most game cams is one of the reasons they are not catching these creatures that and like you say, they can see the camera and know that something is there that shouldn't be.
I could not afford the high priced cameras with the IR no flash and fast responce time only to find it smashed when I went to check it.

I am not sure about eye shine, but my favorite flashlight is the Dorcy Spyder.   It is a tiny little xenon light that uses 2 3v lithium battieries.  It is very inexpensive and very bright.   I like a small light that I can easily fit in my pocket.   You can get one for $15 at thesportsmansguide.com.

I like my 4-cell maglite while out in the woods at night.  One little flick of the wrist, and it becomes a club!  LOL  :D

I decided to try the new Maglite with the 3watt LED bulb. After getting the 2 D cell light I got one of the 3 AA miniMags just for backup. I looked at several different Surefire and other lights but I thought about the cost of batteries of most of the other lights so I made the choice of the easy to find C and AA battery powered Mags.
These liights with the 3watt LED are bright and easy on battery life.

The one thing I have noticed is that wildlife..deer, rabbits, raccoons do not like this light at all. They don't stay around at all when I shine the light on them. The other lights with regular bulbs don't seem to worry them much. The deer will stand and look at you and walk around like you are not even there much of the time. The rabbits are the same way. They just act different with the bright blueish white light the LED puts out.

Wondering if anyone else had noticed this?

Tnwood..have you checked the batteries in your new light. I have seen things like that with the batteries put in wrong..LOL. I hate it when I order something and it doesn't work like it should. It is a pain to ship something back. Some of the mailorder companies will send you a  replacement and have you send  the bad one back in the box they supply. You just have to read the companies return policy before ordering from some places. Sometimes the best price..is not always the best price..when something like this happens. This should be something we all need to look at more closely when ordering on-line.

Edited: I wanted to ask Hatchie Man if he had noticed how the animals reacted with the zeon light. Have you noticed a different reaction to the light as opposed to other older lights?

I've purchased green flip down filters for all my night lights, many sites out there to buy them, I've found green when used with high intensity flash lights works great, doesn't screw up your night vision and if needed just flip down the filter and you have white light again.  I use them on numerous Streamlights, the only light that isn't filtered is the one mounted to the barrel of my primary weapon, if carried..I also carry a good quality IR filter and place it on one of my high intensity lights when using night vision, your flash lights are multi-purpose when using the correct filters.   Try Green, you'll like it..

I bought a small sheet of the plastic IR filter material a few months back and have cut the material to fit several lights I use around bait stations. A couple of days ago I cut a piece to fit over a Coleman hand-held rechargeable spotlight. That night I went into the Ouachitas with another researcher and we tested the output of the light for use with a monocular night vision unit. The light provided enough illumination to see well over 200 yards with the night vision unit. The next night I used it on the place, and could see eye reflection from dogs nearly twice that far. The filter does emit a small amount of visible red light and the filter itself can be seen as a red spot, but apparently animals are not alarmed by the thing. Several years ago I used a glass IR filter from a piece of junked lab equipment to place over a spotlight to use in hunting predators that were destroying livestock. It worked great for a year or so until I dropped the dang thing onto a pile of rocks.

The stuff is easy to cut to fit, and not very expensive. I plan to use it for illumination for a video cam the next outing.

Good info. I have seen those green filters and never though about using/trying one. I will have to check them out.

Could you post the website for that IR plastic filter material. I though I had it bookmarked but if I do..I still can't find it..LOL

Yes - me being a dolt was my first thought...lol.  But when my buddy who does repair work on Sears appliances could't get it to work either.......he popped it open and it looks like the positive post goes nowhere.  He's pretty good with that kind of stuff, so who knows - he might get it to work.  I'm having a steller week for stuff not working - must be the stars!

Mike,  I haven't noticed much difference with the xenon lights.   I have used both xenon and old style krypton bulb lights walking to and from my deer stand and I haven't really been able to tell much difference in the reaction of animals.   I really like the way the xenon bulbs produce a pure white light, but they get hot and can really go through batteries.

On another note, I am looking for a higher power compact light and I've been looking at the Aimshot brand of xenon lights.   Has anyone owned one of these?  I am also looking at the Streamlight Buckmasters twin tack 2L light.   It is neat because it has both the xenon bulb and three green LEDs.

I have seen some of the new Streamlights and they are good lights. The light you are talking about with the 3 green LEDs sounds interesting. If you get it..let us know what you think about it after you field test it. Grumpy has me curious about those green filters.
I do know that the LED lights will not work with IR filters because they don't produce IR light. Someone also told me that you have to have a xenon or krypton bulb, I can't remember which they said worked best, for IR light to be produced. It makes sense that you have to have heat to have IR.

I would like to buy a green filter for my maglite and some of my other lights.   Grumpy where are you getting yours?   I have looked around the net, but I can only find flip up filters for the Surefire or streamlights.

I searched as well and could find nothing green for mag lights, I guess that's why I use streamlights.  Good luck, if your stuck on mag lights try buying photographic color correction filters and cut to size and place in the kit mag light sells for their red and IR filter flip down holder.

No, I'm not stuck on maglites by any means.......I just happen to have a 3D that I got for Christmas.   Like I said, I use the little cheap spyder a good bit in the field.  It shines better than the mag.

I have been wanting to buy something more powerful with a green filter.  I like the Streamlight buckmasters light that I mentioned above, but it isn't much more powerful than the dorcy.   I am actually considering the Streamlight TL-3 with green filter.     Also, Browning makes a lot of 9v "Black Ice" lights that are powerful, but I can't find any filters for them.......except for the Browning "Hero" light that comes with red, blue, and green filters.   I believe it is rated at 200 lumens and retails for $59.99, but I can't find any reviews of it, so I don't know how good of a light it really is.

I found this that you might want to look at.

http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZnighthunter66QQhtZ-1

If you look at one of the flashlite filters, he says he has red, green and a few other color filters that fit the holder. It might be what you are looking for.

That filter for the Qbeam looks interesting.

So, I decided on and bought a new light.   The Streamlight Twin Task rechargeable in Realtree.    It has the Xenon bulb rated at 95 lumens, 3 Blue LEDs, and 3 Red LEDs.   It is charging right now.......will let you know how it performs.

Jason

EDIT:  THAT SHOULD HAVE READ 3 BLUE LEDS AND 3 GREEN LEDS, NOT RED.

Yes, let us know what you think about your new light. Having the LEDs and a regular light in one unit is a good idea. Keep us posted.

I must admit that I am a bit let down with the new light.   First of all, I can't tell that it is very much brighter than my little Dorcy Spyder in Xenon mode.  Secondly, I don't like the on/off button.  It goes like this - green LED, blue LED, Xenon, OFF.   That would not be very handy if you are trying to spot something quickly.   However, I do like the Green and Blue LED's.........they put out a nice light for just 3 LED's.   It will certianly be handy to deer hunt with, so I guess I will keep it......LOL

Lights are just so hit and miss.... speaking of - I just stumbled onto the "varmit Light" that looks like it attaches to any rifle scope.  According to the box it lights up 100 yards and has a flip red filter w/rechargeable batteries...all for a mere $48.  Anyone ever use one of these?  are they worth the $48?...lol

The one that I seen in operation that looks like the one you are talking about was not a lot better than a regular flashlight. I would go with a little better light.

I had forgotten about the Nite Lite line of lights. Most of the coon hunters around here use them and the work crews on the railroad use nite lite lights at work when called out at night. They are long lasting and rugged.

Here is a site that carries them. Click on LIGHTS and you will find they also have those that mount on a rifle scope.

http://www.huntsmart.com/

You can order a catalog from them and get a lot more info on the lights.

This one looks interesting:

IMO stay away from the standard lights, go with the Tactical Lights, the military, SAR, Law Enforcement, etc., use these for a reason, they do what they are intended to do better than most, yes they are expensive but I've found you get what you pay for, and I base this from personal experience after spending many, many, many years in the SAR, Law Enforcement field using more specialized equip. than most.

Scott, I've never heard of the "Varmit Light".  Who makes it and does it say how many candle power or lumens it gives?      Have you considered the Streamlight TL-3 that I mentioned above?   I'm still thinking about getting one of those.  It claims 211 lumens and you can easily find filters and gun mounts for them.......I've also been able to find them several places for about $50 (for just the light).

http://www.streamlight.com/product/product.aspx?pid=37

Just curious, what is everyone's  favorite light (for under $100)?

OptronicsĀ® NightBlaster 100 Yard Varmint Hunting Light

$49.99

Lol - it looked neat at the store.  I found it while I was waiting for my 10 min. background check for the shotgun I was buying - that took an hour and a half....long time to wonder the isles...lol (apparently because I was born in CA it took forever - although last year it only took a few min's).

Grumpy is probably right - about getting what you pay for and going tactical - he usually is...lol

I was just curious if anyone had ever used one and if it worked worth a D*mn.

I'm with Grumpy on this. There may be some things you squeak by with on the cheap, but on most things the best you can afford is the cheapest in the end. If your life may depend on a piece of equipment, or that once in a lifetime shot at a trophy animal get the very best you can afford. We can't all afford the best that is out there, but get the best you can afford. Tools are a good example. If you buy a cheap tool to use for one job you may luck out and that tool do the single job for you, but more often than not a cheap tool will let you down before you finish the one job you bought it for. I personally would rather wait and save money until I have enough to get quality then to get in a rush and buy something that I won't be satisfied with and that might let me down at the worst possible time.

Grumpy - what is they light you had attached to your shotgun? And the mount?  It looked pretty (bleep) bright when you hit it on in the bottoms.  I think I need about 3 of them.
