Six weeks ago I put in an order for a custom made cargo trailer that would facilitate research and camping. Well it finally was delivered this week. I spent a lot of time with the trailer dealer to configure all of the features that I wanted. This is the result. Some of the custom features that I ordered were, operable windows with screens all around, two crank up roof hatches with screens, several cigarette lighter ports (strategically positioned for recharging equipment), insulated roof with pre finished ceiling, wall switches to turn off power to the extra lights and charging ports, and a cargo box on the front tongue to contain several deep cycle marine batteries to power everything. The wiring harness to the truck will keep everything charged up, or I can detach the truck and run off of battery power. The dealer would not install the front window, so I will have to do that myself. There was a warranty issue pertaining to leaks while driving. I still need to install carpet, (to insulate against cold and make it quiet) paint the interior walls, build some fold down shelves, and lockable storage bins,  tint the windows and install pull down black out shades. The tinting and shades will be so that I can be inside at night and run the lights with out being seen from the outside, by the research subjects. Now I can just pull into the research area and be ready very quickly, as opposed to spending several hours every time I need to set up of take everything down. Everything can be stowed inside the trailer quickly, and be made ready for the road. This will allow me more time for researching. I can't wait to get the rest of the alterations made and get this puppy in the field.

Oh and I just bought a new truck to pull it with, it should make those long trips more comfortable. If any one has any other ideas to make it more conducive for research, I would like to hear your sugestions.

Pat

Wow Pat !  Absolutely beautiful in form and function. How about a port for your telescopic periscope ? Antennas for communication? A dedicated laptop? Now you can operate one of those wireless stealthcams and recieve the transmitted photos directly to your trailer. I know they are basically line-of -sight but if you could build an antennae pole that could telescope on up to 80-100 ft. you could cover a vast area. Man, I can come up with all kinds of ideas for you ! Thanks for sharing your new stuff with us. I know that you are proud of them--and I'm proud for you.-------TnC-----------------

Really cool trailer SA!  Like TNC, I can think of all kinds of goodies to equip it with.   Put you a couple of hammock hooks in there, and you'll be ready for those all-night recording sessions.  Be cool to be in there when a booger comes up and rocks it from side to side, checkin it out....

A truly excellent war wagon!

Pat, great set-up.  I am soooo jealous.  But I guess we all can't be spoiled.  lol

I know that rig will pay off in your research.  Wish I could see ya'll this weekend, but can't make it. Plan on going in Dec., though.

Your new trailer can also double as a doghouse for Bo.  Coonbo will assure you that he'll behave.  lol

Very nice set up Pat.  Wireless internet, and a couple of cams/thermal mounted on top, and I agreee with TNC, maybe run that wireless cam antenna off of a high mounted pole to give maximum range.  Even still, it is a nice set up.  I know you will enjoy it!     H.F.

SA that is really cool. I have an Idea I hope ya don't mind me saying. maybe put brackets on the sides so you can hold one of those dish type microphones to it so if the wether is bad or too cold you can stay warm & dry and still be able to hear. or even on the rear corners  of the trailer

have one wired within a teloscopic pole that can be rasied and lowered to whatever hight you want. I was I fireman before I moved here and almost all firetrucks now have lights on these poles that are attached to the corners of the body and some you can even remove and make like a tri-pod out of it. just make sure you have enough cord. you could put cameras or what ever you want on them w/ a little fabrication. stay at around 5 or 6 feet to 15 to 20 if yu want. Go to a local fire dept to see what I mean if you'd like. Also the tinted windows may bring out the curiosity of a BF to try to get a closer look at ya in there. good move!! hope my idea may help,

God Bless,

frog

I just thought I would add this....After meeting Skunkape this past weekend I have no  doubt the trailer we'll be the very best as possible.I am quite sure he will take all ideals from everyone and do his very best to apply them in anyway he can. He is very much a person who enjoys other people and what they have to say.One more thing.....Pat I was very proud to have meet you(and all of the others as well) and look forward to hanging out with you on anyother outing in the furture! Sorry we did not get to say bye ,but I don't feel it's good bye to any of you but a see you later!  Thanks for a great weekend to all of you!:D

Wow.  Quite an impressive set up.   You guys sure do know your stuff! And you sure go all out to collect your evidence.

After seeing how serious you all are about your research, I  can see that I am still just an observer myself.    I just drive out in my Jimmie and see what I can see, or hear what I can hear, but I can see that I had better start trying to get some recordings or something so that I can keep up with all of you guys.

I am very glad that I joined this forum.  I have met some incredibly friendly people on this site and I hope to meet you all  in person someday.

Okay here's a suggestion but maybe one you don't really want to think about. How about a hinged trap door secret escape hatch cut into the floor?

This way when a creature gets either really curious or really mad at this strange thing sitting in his territory and starts bashing it, shaking it and/or trying to flip it over you can quietly slip out the bottom and crawl away to safety while the rig is being attacked! I bet ya didn't think of that little option, now did ya? :P ;)

Very cool rig Pat, best of luck with it! I hope you have great success when you deploy it in the field!

Hey Skunk Ape, that is an awesome looking trailer. Hopefully I will have one very similar to yours within the next few months. I've been thinking about getting a setup like yours for a while now. Gotta sell my motorhome first though. Could you give me some specifics on the size, brand of trailer, weight, approximate cost? One thing I plan to use with mine is a set of 4 night vision/surviellance cameras, one on each corner. Hopefully for full coverage. I've got my laptop on order and already have an inverter and 3 large deep cycle batteries for powering everything. All I need now is the trailer and camera's. haha I would love to see some interior pics whenever you take some.
