I have moved info from several different topics and posts into this one.
Info about this recorder:
http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=1916
The going price $199
You can find a few extras..4gig SD card and free shipping for the same price on Ebay.
I really like the SD card memory. My camera and the gamecam use SD cards.
If anyone has anything that uses SD cards and you would like more memory..(buy.com) has them at good prices right now.
I have looked high and low for something better than a voice recorder and a low price. The price might not seem that low..but compared to anything else out there..with the features it has, it is the best priced recorder out there.
To let you know what I think about the new H2 recorder I have one word..GREAT!
It comes with an instruction book and you will need it to figure out just what this little jewel can do. It will normalize a recording internally and the recording modes vary from Wave 44.1 khz to MP3 320 kbps.
There is no hum or internal noise that I can tell and what is recorded is pure sound.
All functions are menu driven. You can set the recording level and preview the scale before you start recording.
It will record in a surround sound mode (360 degrees) and you can tell the difference in direction of the sounds on the recordings.
I have not tested the external mics yet, but plan to soon. I hope to do a little outdoor recording using this recorder soon.
It has line in, ext. mic, usb, AC power plug with power adapter.

Info from JayB
Here's a comprehensive review of the Zoom H2. He seems to be rather enthusiastic about it.

I'm sure all of this will mean more to you knowledgables than it does to me. (LOL) (But my sons have vowed to educate me.)

If you are going to record using 1 external microphone
You also might look at getting a stereo to mono adapter plug if you are going to use only one mic. I played with this on another stereo recorder. If you only have one mic..most likely it will have a mono plug and you get an off center one track recording. That was my experience anyway.
The recorder has a female stereo jack (plug-in). Some single mics have mono plugs (male)..so check your plug and make sure which one you have. The easy way..look and seen how many rings (black rubber looking..real small) on the plug-in. If it has 1..it is mono..if 2..it is stereo.
If you have ever plugged up headphones and didn't get them in all the way in and you can only hear only one side..this is the effect of mono on stereo. You have to have 2 sides to get stereo.
The little mono to stereo adapter will correct this. You will not have true stereo..but you will have sound on both left and right.
Radio shack has them ..just make sure you get the right conversion. It would have female (in) mono..male (out) stereo.

I noted one thing. It also has phone (headphone) out. You can listen to what you have recorded ...but... the volume level is not very high for the Samson or the Grado headphones.
If you would like to listen to your recordings in the field here is what I recommend.
Check Ebay for a CMOY.
This is the one I have an it works great.
Micro Cmoy headphone amp - Opamp2227 - Amplifier is a good one.
The CMOYs with the OPA2134 OpAmp chip are good also. I think the 2227 is an up-grade over the 2134.
The components on the inside are what makes the difference in the sound and you will not believe what these little things do with small/low volume out-put devices, like the recorder or walkman type players.
These things make a small radio or tape player..KICK with headphones.
Here is what I already have and these are great. I use them when listening to the recordings I have made and hearing those little sounds that you just don't hear though speakers.
Here is a review about these. What the guy says is true. They are hot in the summer and they are bulky..but the sound is great.
Grado Labs SR-60 Headphones, $69.00
Grado's over-the-ear headphones are black, bulky, and so retro-styled that they wouldn't look out of place on the set of a 1950s science-fiction film, and you might not think to use them with your iPod. And yet the Grados won me over the moment I slipped them on. The sound is simply transporting. Wearing these headphones, it was easy to imagine myself standing just behind Elvin Jones' drum kit or in the center of Motown's Snakepit. The Grados, alas, aren't well-suited to outdoor use. The cord is thick, lengthy, and cumbersome; the earpieces do almost nothing to guard against ambient noise (as I gathered from the dirty looks of the woman sitting one microfilm machine over). They're useless at the gym, too hot to wear in the summer heat, and bulky enough to draw unwanted stares on the subway, but I like the sound so much that I wear them out anyway.

They have some more expensive headphones but these are the best I have ever used. You can take a regular pocket radio and plug a cmoy (from ebay) in and jack to the headphones and they sound like a $1000 stereo setup.

If you go here: http://picasaweb.google.com/bamabigfoot
You can click on "My Sound Recording Dish" and see my parabolic reflector I made out of an old satellite dish. It works great and you will be amazed at what you can hear.
Now..if hearing is all you wish to do..there are some less than the cost of hunters ears options you can try and it will work.
You can use any microphone (standard not a power mic) and a CMOY that can be found on e-bay.
Just look around and read the info on these. They will produce amazing sound on even the small pocket radios and tape players with a good set of headphones.
Now..if you want to be able to hear bass on headphones..and I have these and they work real good. I listen to the sound recordings I make with these on and I hear the things most people miss.
http://www.gradolabs.com/frameset_main.htm
The SR60s are great. A little expensive..but you will like them. They are the best sounding headphones I have ever had and are comfortable to wear.
This company makes some really expensive headphones and these are the low end for them..but they are still great.
So for listening..microphone..cmoy..headphones..all you need.
For recording..a little different. The mics I use have to have power from a pre-amp and the pre-amp also amps the sign up a little before it goes to the recorder.
http://www.visivoxtechnologies.com/products.htm#
You have to have the pre-amp and the mics and something to record on..tape..voice recorder..mini disk..whatever.
The voice recorder I use now is an olypus WS100.
http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1170
Recording in the best mode ..it records in Windows Media Audio (WMA) format and this lets you enjoy your recordings on any standard Windows-based PC.
WS-100 is equipped with 64MB of internal memory for up to 27 hours of recording time and features a new direct PC link capability, allowing you to plug the recorder right into a computer, with no USB cable necessary, for easy downloading of audio, document, image files and more.
There are a few new recorders coming out on the market that record in better quality and longer record time. I have not looked at the new stuff lately so I really don't know what out there at the time.
E-bay has been the best place to find what I was looking for at the best price sofar. You just have to shop around and read the feedback on the seller. I never buy from a seller that only has a few sells to his/her credit.
Hope this helps..I know all this stuff can be confusing..so if you have any questions just ask.

One of the things that I wondered about. How long can you record on a set of batteries.
I found this info:
I let it record until battery exhaustion and it produced a 760 Mb file before the battery warning came on at about 5.3 hours. The record mode was MP3 320 kbps. I didn't check the whole file for dropouts. I used a 2 Gb Crucial SD card.
I would suspect that recording at 128 kbps would run for over 6 hours on a set.
With a 4Gig SD card, when recording at 128 kbps MP3 format I am showing over 50 hours of record time on the card.
This means..before you run out of record space you will have to replace the batteries a few times.

I have been wanting to test this recorder out in a place that has no background noise. I am still looking..LOL
I have made this little recording to give all an idea of how well this recorder will record.
It has always amazed me how these little birds can make this much noise.
Its a knock..but not the kind I am looking for.

| Hi Mike, Man that machine is really doing well. Is that a Piliated Woodpecker hammering? Sounds like some of the sounds from the old Tarzan movies, doesn't it? I'm rather ashamed to say that I have not done too much with my H2 yet.Been feeling real tired and run down lately and tending to a young'un 24/7, alone, is the toughest job you will ever love.Great recording! You must be feeling some better! Take care---------TnC--------------------

I recently bought the Zoom H2 digital recorder and I'm impressed with it. The recordings I've made with it are always super clear and it will record soft/low volume sounds as well as loud sounds equally well. The four built in mics seem to be really good quality mics. I also like the extras you get with the H2 like the little "tri-foot" stand (so it will stand up on any fairly flat surface), the bottom mounted handle (to hold it upright without actually touching the body of the unit) and the wind screen.
I think for the money I spent (I got mine for $173 online) the Zoom H2 is a bargain, especially considering the performance of this unit. The next step up from the H2 in pro-quality digital recorders are all $400 and up. So if you don't want to spend $400 or more and don't want a low cost but equally low quality voice recorder, then this is the one for you.
