Bashing my head into a tree would be a blessing if BF grabbed me. I just hope that there are no stumps handy as that is what my wife allows is going to happen to me. Haha

Hey KiteSquatch!!--Do you hang glide? Do you have a craft of your own? Describe it please! What part of North Carolina do you live? I'm real familiar with the Western part around Bryson City and Sylva. All my Native American ancestors are from this area.I should say what was left of them after 1838 and Andrew Jackson's death march. Many of my ancestors died as a result of Smallpox being purposely introduced to kill them and many died along their forced removal.White men found Gold on their land and stole their property and their minerals.I'm going up there in May to try and locate my Great-grandfathers grave and to perform some cleansing ceremonies for my peoples spirits. All that died untimely deaths and viscious and brutal deaths---- their spirits need help to catch the Spirit Horse so they can move on in peace.---If you live in that vicinity maybe we can get together and do some flying.I plan on taking my Bird with me -----TennesseeCherokee----------

Hey Dixie Banshee!!-----What does your wife infer when she speaks of the tree stumps??  Do you think that a Booger bashing you brains out against a tree would be a desireable way to go?? Not me!!  I'm gonna try to bargain my way out of the situation and if that fails, I'm gonna run till there ain't nothin left of my shoes.I know they would have no trouble dispatching anyone that they chose to. They can swing a grown deer and feral hog by the hind legs and crush their skulls on a tree trunk--that just scares the livin s--t out of me!!! I'm 6 ft and weigh 220 lb but I don't want to tussle with a Booger!!!!-----TNC---------------

I tried it a few years ago.  The wife bought a coupon from Kitty Hawk Kites for a session on the dunes @ Jockey's Ridge, and a tandem glide @ Currituck Airport.
After the tandem, I decided I wasn't so interested.  You usually fly a hang glider in a 'prone' position, and my neck just doesn't like that for very long.

I'd LOVE to try para-gliding, but there's none of that in this part of the state.  Most in NC is in the western part of the state in the mountains.

What part of North Carolina do you live? I'm real familiar with the Western part around Bryson City and Sylva.
I live in the N.E. corner of the state, about 30[?] miles from the Virginia border.

About the farthest west I've been for any length of time is around Rocky Mount.  There use to be an amateur rocketry launch in that area every month at a site that was several hundered acres in size.  That has since moved to a site closer to New Bern.

I've driven through the western parts of the state a couple of times while travelling, but we never stayed anywhere.

I'd like to try KAPing in the mountainous parts of NC, but right now I just don't have the time to get away for that.

Well, the weather is getting about right for me to take to the skies again in search of our evasive boogers. It's on the downslope of April and the weather will soon be condusive to flying ultralight aircraft. Got my onboard computer re-installed. I added an altimeter so I know  within a foot of how high off the ground I am. I'll post some photos when I try out my new digital camera. There must be alot of  interest in powered parachuting because there are a great deal of hits on this subject. If anyone has any questions--just ask !---TnC---

Anytime you want to go DB, just holler. I will take as many photos as I can when I fly over that site. I was gonna fire it up today and take a short cruise then the wind started kicking up and gusting to 30 mph and that put an end to that idea right quick !  By May 1st. we should start to get into some stability and nice flying weather. I'm gonna fly to Corinth,Ms -to my sisters home then. It's only 20 miles as the crow flies from me to there. Keep your eyes peeled and your nose to the ground. I'll keep you an open co-pilot seat.----TnC------

Hello Dricke, Why did you get shed of your gyrocopter?  I always wanted one. I started flying in the early 80's. Bought a new Weedhopper ultralight and put over 1000 hours on it. Got it in Baldwyn Mississippi and sold it to a feller in Guntown ,Ms----just a few miles from where I initially purchased it.  Really do miss it-- it was stable and just felt good like a fine glove feels on your hand.  That's a nice lookin yellow plane you got there. You been flying long?  I got a friend of mine to weld my frame---he's a certified aircraft welder. Bought a Fuji 488 snowmobile engine and rebuilt it and got a 72" 3-blade Ivoprop. All the components I just scrounged around for so I have a fraction of what most PP's cost invested and I learned a lot in the two years that it took me to build it. I didn't use anything secondhand except the engine block. If you are determined and are patient you can get some great deals on all the components needed to build one.I did splurge and I did buy a Grand Rapids Technologies engine information system with a GPS interface. Thanks for your posting.I really enjoyed it!----TnC-----------------

Dricke, Your yellow plane looks like an ag sprayer --- is it? A guy in Corinth, Mississippi has one that looks alot like yours. It's an Air Tractor AT- 402. It's a turboprop  built in 1992. They are very aerobatic and can climb nearly vertically at the end of a field. Looks like they are going to crash into the treeline but they have so much torque and muscle they climb right out of it.Gotta be a rush to fly!!-----TnC----------------------------------------

Yep its a AT-402 turboprop. I been cropdusting for about 35 years now whew! an I aint busted one yet knock on wood! I've lost count on total flying time we were guessing around 20,000 hours.

I am a scrounger, also a ebay master for finding what I need. I sold the gyro because the boss and everybody kept harping on how dangerous they were even though they really are probably safest thing flying but you need instruction if you are not a pilot. I have plans for a two place Parsons gyrocopter and a spare McCullough engine so maybe someday I'll get started on that project. i think a gyrocopter is a great machine for looking for BF, easy to transport,  land on a dime, and park in your garage, and the king of slow flight.

That's a pretty good record Dricke! As a teenager I took flying lessons from an accident-prone cropduster. I don't think the guy went 3 months at a time without some sort of dire mishap, either in the air or on the ground! To this day I'm amazed my dad, who never had an ounce of respect for unsafe pilots, let me fly with the guy!

Here in the Texas Panhandle we have quite a few people who have powered hang gliders. The would be great to see areas that you couldn't get to by vehicle. Some have a 3 wheeled go cart frame ( for lack of better description) that they hunt coyotes with around the playa lakes. This way they can fly and carry rifles and other equipment. However, we do not have many days of less than 15 mph winds, so you don't see them fly everyday. Hot air balloons are becoming popular here as well. Flying slow enough and staying silent would be beneficial to hunting bigfoot from the air. Something a bigfoot would not be aware of - yet.

Ken Wallis - the man who actually flew the "Little Nellie" gyroplane {autogyro} for the James Bond pic, YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE - did some experimental gyro flights back in the late '60's[?] carrying an infrared line scanner, to help law enforement look for murder victims located outdoors.

I don't know all the details of his work back then, but it seems like a 'gyro with current-technology scanning equipment would be an IDEAL platform for searching for our 'big hairy bipedal friends'.

Start building that Parsons'!!!

After reading your post Kite-Squatch, I couldn't understand Dricke's boss thought a gyrocopter would be more dangerous than an Air Tractor? What's up with that? Dricke, get busy building your gyro and let me know what parts you need and I'll help you locate them. It's fixing to be great weather and better visibility for searching for boogers from the air. The leaves are already starting to turn and some are already falling.

Well if ya think he was concerned about the gyrocopter, latest crazy thing is a Kawasaki ZX12R I just bought, fellers i want to tell yall this thing is faster than the Airtractor 220mph on the flats hehehe! if ya got the guts to try it an I dont.

I want to post a link to the parson's flying on Youtube I feel one of these things would be ideal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QRZb-fZMd8 I dont know if we are allowed to post links but there ya go

It is a good thing when people care about you I understand the boss's concern, but I feel if yer not living on the edge yer taking up to much room. My cigarette addiction is another area I hear about almost daily until i pointed out flying a 150 mph 10 feet from the ground, breathing turbine exhaust, chemical fumes and the list goes on and on, the fact is we aint getting out here alive, its like when a BF bluff charges ya you will live more in that few seconds than most people will in a life time.

Dricke, Thanks for the You Tube link. That Parsons tandem would be a rush to fly!  Where did he ditch his passenger?  I don't believe that I would fly without a helmet either. Do you know what size engine is on that one? It looks rather small and seems to crank easy. You need to go ahead and start building yours soon! I know you want to! LOL! Thanks again---TnC----

Hey I got an idea ;) I will take the plans down to kinko's and get some copies made and send you a set they are not complete but they are complete enough they are missing just a few drawings not enough to make a differance.

The motor they are using is probably a rotax 65hp? I have a McCullough 75hp I thought I might use but having run one I dont like the idle it needs to idle fairly fast but they make 1hp per lb. the motor just weighs 75 lbs. Rotor blabes will be the most expense part about 2,500 the airframe I figured would be around 500 but you have to be a scrounger, a feller could build it even cheaper

Dricke, I appreciate the offer but I believe I've built my last flying machine. Mine does all I need. If I were 20-30 years younger, I'd probably take you up on it. It does really look like it would be a blast to fly. I've got a son that depends totally on me to be here among the living, know what I mean? Sometimes I get a little nervous just flying my powered parachute. Anything higher than 20 ft. off the ground can be deadly, but you are well aware of that. If and when you get ready to build one I'd like to help you do some scrounging. I might have some parts right now that you could use. Take care!  TnC-------------------
