many reports i've read talk of the creature lorking in the brush but hear it breathing heavy. is this due to :

just having a large lung capacity?

nervousness?

might have just ran down some prey?

ok while on tha subject, i've heard of thier incredible speed, anyonw know how long of a distance can one maintain that speed? I would immagine on all 4's would last longer than bipedal..

Hey frog ,  I always knew when the big guy was at my window  , it was when I heard this raspy   guttural  breathing .  When I would get up the nerves to peek out from under the sheet, that is when I would see it standing there  .

I have no clue as to why they breathe that way other then their lungs are so big . I have also heard bulls make the same noise that I have heard the big guy make  .

Froggy, first let me answer your first question, I have heard the heavy breathing with an added wheeze like maybe some illness ar age of said BF, which I believe is due to running. If you take in consideration the size/body mass of a BF, that is alot of wieght to be moving.

Now let me answer your second question. due to the size/body mass I don't think "adult" BF are capable of sustaining a high rate of speed for a long distance. I believe they could possable reach speeds of 40-45 MPH but that would be the max. If you look at the fastes land animal in the world (cheetah) it has been clocked at 70MPH and they can only sustain that speed for I believe it was one mile, and they are specifically built for speed. so an animal built like BF would be unable to sustain lon disctance speed.

Thanks, shane

Froggy,

I believe the answer is "D -  None of the above".

I personally believe that a lot of the heavy breathing is for intimidation purposes or, in some cases, it might be due to anticipation.

I have personally experienced incidents where the creature was out-of-sight in the darkness or in heavy cover, but I could clearly hear it breathing heavily, and in most of those circumstances it was quite intimidating, and that was the distinct feeling that I was getting through my sixth sense.

In other cases, around my home in Mississippi, I would hear them breathing, but the feeling I would get was that they were mildly excited with anticipation that I was going to leave them some goodies or they were curious about what I was doing.

Any of you that have dogs can understand the latter situation.  When your dog is expecting to "GO" or get a treat, he will be panting loudly in anticipation.

And concerning their endurance at speed.  I once saw four of them hauling down a power line right-of-way at high speed on all fours and they went at least a hundred yards or so before veering into the woods.  But I believe they could maintain that speed for a few hundred yards, if necessary.

I've been charged from around 300 yards away a couple of times, and they got there QUICK.  (Reference the incident when Armstrong Corner got its name. )

Good questions froggy.

At the old place in the boonies in Oklahoma, we heard that heavy breathing.  The fist time I was alone riding my horse around the arena.  My horse's ears went every which way but luckily he didn't throw me. Heard it several more times, with company and without afterwards.  Then when my siblings moved in, the breathing was ongoing.   In fact, my little bro just called it "the breather" but we had no idea what was going on til he saw it.   Then, things changed.....  it seemed more bold and brazen after that.  Other strange things went on but the weirdest one was the nite my sis and bro were driving home from school.  They were about a mile from home, sis was driving, they both saw two, thick and hairy legs clear the hood of the car.  While sis was trying to control the car, bro got a good look and he could actually see the pelvic area.  He said it was "HUGE"....

I'm not sure how fast they were going, but the speed limit was 60.  It was not a very busy road because there were just a few homes out there.  Most of the land contained larger farms and the neighboring game preserve (which was a very spooky place) was approx 9,000 acres directly across from my old place.

That is totally amazing. I have heard some pretty cool accounts but this one is a first. Talk about instant reaction. He jumped that car like it was a hurdle.

Yes, it was a huge shock to them and when they walked in the door it was nonstop yelling and jumping up and down.  I told them it was probably a big bird and that they both needed to see a shrink.  They have never backed down even though I was skeptical and told them they were seeing things.  I may have mentioned it before but they actually could hear it breathing more often than me.

Little bro said he remembers one time very well.  He had the hood of the car up, head inside working on it and his girlfriend XXX was holding the flashlight.  She heard it and asked "XXXXXX what the (bleep) was that?"  He told her "Don't pay any attention to it, it's just "the breather" - she never came back to visit us.

Back in June of 2001 I was at a location in louisiana. This is a place where my van got stuck (that's another story). It was a small group camping out. 3 tents 7 people. We had all turned in and probably about 15 minutes later is when we heard the T Rex scream. It was lets just say scary to hear something like that. It came from the bottoms but I kept thinking if whatever made that was in the field with us. I don't know what I would do. Then 30 min later I heard a sound outside the tent on my side. Which on my side is where we had the potty set up for us women. The sound i heard was clearing throat sound it did it 3 times. I knew it wasn't the others cause I didn't hear them come out of their tent (zipper). It was a deep sound. Some people have suggested that it might've been a growl. It could've been. I don't know. Let's just say I didn't get any sleep.

The heavy breathing could be due to over exertion but you have to remember that these are humanoid and are subject to the same illnesses as we are. So it may be an illness such as a respiratory infection, pneumonia, or even asthma.

As far as their running distance I would think that they could match a horse.
