The article I wrote about the history of these creatures in Alabama should be of help to you. You will find the names that the different tribes had for these creatures.

http://www.alabamabigfoot.com/bigfoot/reports/BFHistory.htm

This should show that they (the Native Americans) knew about these creatures and gave them names.

Hope this helps.

That is a hard subject to tackle.  Are you researching various Native American stories?  For the southeastern tribes, look up John R. Swanton and his numerous works on beliefs and legends of Native American tribes from when he worked with the Smithsonian.

Keep in mind that they won't call it bigfoot or sasquatch, but generic names like giants, or something else.

Good luck; it is not something I would do a paper on due to lack of references.

As far as talking in Cherokee language, it doesn't make much sense to me.  1.) Why would they speak a language that is not widely used today?  2.) If their vocal chords and mouth & tongue are structured differently, their language would not sound the same as human language.  Just my opinion, but good luck on that paper!

Being able to be stealthy and silent. I don't know who taught who or is it whom? Either way being silent was very much something instilled in Native American children. Something that has for the most part been left behind as we have all began to blend together, as one culture. Many of the old ways have been lost.

Crying out (in the wild) is usually a death sentence for either humans or other creatures.

Being silent was practicing the fact we have two ears and one mouth...listen twice, talk once.

Being "blended" has it's own unique challenges especially when one world interferes with the other.  However, the third eye is my touchstone.

One practice that is shared by NA's (especially the plains tribes) and BF's is "counting coup".  One of the main ways of counting coup is to risk injury or death by getting close enough to an enemy warrior to touch them with your hand or a "coup stick" and then to escape unharmed.  A major aspect of counting coup is to let your enemy know that if you had really wanted to hurt him, you could have.

This practice was a way for the younger or lower ranked braves in the tribe to earn prestige and recognition.  I believe this is practiced by adolescent and sub-Alpha BF for the same reason.

Whether BF consider us to be an "enemy warrior" or not is debatable, but they certainly often regard us at least as a rival or even an undesirable in their territory.  Several of us who have spent enough time in the field in the right places have had BF sneak right up to us, within touching distance.  Usually they will try to remain undiscovered, but when we literally bump into them or stumble over them or almost make physical contact with them, they will often growl at us but, so far, have always then run away from us, once discovered.

I believe this is the BF's version of "counting coup".  When we were at the mounds during the October Alabama outing, even though we had a group of 22 people there, and were quite noisy doing a live blogtalk broadcast, we had at least two BF's approach us very closely.  One was just south of our vehicles, near where Highpocket and GeorgiaTracker were listening, and the other came up behind dwells' truck.  We could smell it and the next day we found its track.  They got close enough to us that we knew that if they had wanted to harm us, they could have.

Counting coup, as Coonbo explained so well, is psychological warfare. It is as if to say,"I could have easily killed you." No doubt, boogers posess super strength. I remember reading a report long ago from the Pacific Northwest(maybe Northern California) about construction workers finding full 55 gallon barrels of hydraulic oil that were tossed many yards away from their location the evening before.Coonbo's latest photos of the one foot diameter tree that was twisted off some 8-10 ft. above ground---just another example of their tremendous strength.I've also read reports of boogers running alongside vehicles traveling 50+ mph.We are a curiosity to them----almost like the way a kitten plays with it's first mouse. We are fortunate that their demeanor is for the most part....inquisitive----TnC
