I have a couple of gators in my lake that are getting too close to the dock. Sooner or later they are going to get one of my dogs. I bought a few supplies and rigged up my lizard fishing tackle. The other end will be attached to a tree, and a half of a chicken will be put on the hook.

Wish me luck

I have never gone "fishing" for gators, so I have to ask a question -- what the heck do you use as fishing line -- a tow chain, braided cable?  And then the next question -- what do you do once you have one caught?? (Personally, I think RUN would be my response).  Thank you for adding to my vastly empty storehouse of knowledge!

I been there myself Skunk Ape. I live in Northern Florida (LA) and deal with gators on a regular basis. A couple months ago I got up to go to work, closed the front door, started walking to my truck and had a 6 footer in the front yard. Almost ruined my morning..lol   I've noticed the population have increased in the last few years. More gators in Fla. than ever.

I will cheer from the sidelines.:D

Sounds like great sport, SA. I like your rig. Looks like the hook may be the weak link. How big are your gators? Will they roll like a croc when they are hooked?

Your lake looks like a bass/bream factory. Impressive vines. Kudzu?

Please keep us in the loop on this'un.

You need a 6in SS shark hook, good heavy duty swivel and a beef liver. Attach cable to a real good tree limb. Have the hook with the liver about 12 inches out of the water. Gator goes up and bites down..weight goes back into the water and you have gator on hook.

I seen this done. I have never harmed any gator. I have never eaten any gator. Folks that have, said it tastes like chicken..I had just as soon eat chicken..LOL

Mike (watch1)

***
Why you need a swivel: They will turn over and over and over ..just rolling and rolling and it will twist the cable until something breaks.

Well if Mr. Boone was not successful in harvesting a gator, you can bet it was not because he did not give it a good, long hard try!!!! That young man don't give up!

If SA needs someone to keep his hook baited, he is the man for the job.

I was fishing in florida about a year ago, and after cacthing a 10lb mud fish, (which are totally useless in every way except apparently to gators), I had a visitor hoping the splashes would mean an easy meal. I just stepped back and grabbed my camera. The guy that was hosting me and my step dad said it was an 11 footer, all I know is it was large and more excited about my catch than I was.

I was out in the Green Swamp this weekend, and found this alligator snapping turtle in the road. So I thought that I would rescue him. As soon as I picked him up, it tried to bite my hand. Hows that for gratitude? Anyway, I put him in the back of the truck, and put him out on the edge of a small lake.

SA,

In the pic with him smiling, are you holding him up by his tail?   Cause if you are, that's probably not a smile....:P

Of course I am holding it up by it's tail! I was worried that it might ruin the "cute little smile" on my fingers.

Oh good, you'd enjoy a picture of the most amazing looking turtle we saw in Wichita a few years ago at an RV show of all places.  His name is "Crunch" and he is BIG!  Now just gotta find that pic for you.

Skunk didn't tell y'all about his ultimate gator hunting method!

It's ol bub being towed (real slow) behind the boat on water ski's while he's holding on to the tow rope w/one hand and a piece of KFC in the other.

Your'e right about that TX.

But with those beedy eyes, 'Ol Bub sort of looks like a top water plug.

Might be able to use him for gator bait.

Here is a howl that was recorded near my cabin in 2006. My friend Dan McGee recorded it. Sound familiar?

SA,

Your lake looks like a nice place to pass the time. It sounds like you'll be cooking up some gator tail before long. I hope you get them before they get your dogs.

Please tell my that you are a licensed alligator trapper with the state of Florida.  Otherwise, what you are talking about is illegal.  You cannot bait and trap alligators from your dock.  The government wants its $51.50 afterall.  See http://myfwc.com/gators/ for all the information.

I am employed as a park ranger with the state of Florida, so I feel obligated to speak up about this matter.

Yes, alligators will go after your dogs.  But so will Florida panthers, and you can't trap them either.
