I am an avid hunter, and have no problem bringing home a deer, or for that matter any game animal. I don't hunt for a trophy, but for the food I don't need it, but I enjoy it.
With that being said I will never shoot one of our hairy friends, and I will not carry any kind of a firearm when I am in the field doing research. It is my belief that they can sense when you are armed. I would like to see one up close and personable, and I don't believe it would be possible as long as they sense danger.
Where I do research we have never had any aggression directed at us ie rock or stick throwing that has happened in other places, and I think this is mainly due to the fact that we show no aggression toward them. If I am wrong and get my head caved in some day so be it. Put it on my headstone " He Tried" lol
Any way my point is I feel safer walking around in the woods at night, than I do walking around downtown. Like they say " A Country Boy Can Survive" and could do very well without all the hustle, and bustle of city life.
I will always be no-kill and have a problem with anyone that does.
Keith

As you might gather, it has been awhile since I spent any time reading the board, and am trying to play ketch-up. LOL So my two-cents worth.
I, also, used to think that pro-kill was the way to go, but in the course of reading these, and other, posts, I have to admit that I don't think I could pull the trigger in any but a life or death situation.
I am 59 years old, and have been fascinated by the subject since I was 10. I go out looking because I want to SEE one with my own two eyes. I DO carry when I am out, but, I also take steps to make sure I have an escape, so I am not forced to do anything to harm one of these animals.

Just got back from an area I have been researching. We had a hard soaking rain yesterday, so I went to see if I could possibly find a track. Nothing was found, but I did leave some fresh baked bread where it could be found. Maybe, with a little luck, when it is retrieved a footprint will be left behind.

First, let me perfectly honest about this. I HAVE NOT (DERN IT) seen our friend. It will be(I think) one of the high points of my life when (if) I do.
Second, I just discovered that there is ongoing research in the area I visited. As a result I am going to contact the lead researcher and, if he wants, stop going in there, so as to not cause him any problems. He is much more knowledgable and experienced than I am, and will be able to do much better research than I would be able to.

An update to my remarks on here yesterday.
I contacted the researcher in the area I have been visiting, identified myself and gave him a description of my vehicle, and a rundown of all my activities in the area. About all I have done there is drive through, looking for tracks, and, yesterday, I left some bread.
I have assured him that I will not be going back in, so as not to disturb anything that might be there.
