Hey froggyvet, I think most on this forum prescribe to the idea that the only dumb question is the one not asked.
Can't remember if I've ever heard of anyone throwing rocks back into the general area from where they were thrown from. Although I'm sure it's probably happened, don't think I've ever read about what the results might have been.
I'm sure others will chime in and we'll get a much more informative answer before too long.

Good question. I have heard many suggest that people toss rocks or pine cones back. I for one have not and don't really think I ever will. Even a gentle toss from them might not be so gentle shoule it bean me in the head.
I do know of an instance of tossing an apple back to them. That errr didn't deflect the next pine cone that hit soundly on the knee of the person tossing the apple.

Not a dumb question at all. And yes, many people have done it. I have tried throwing apples and/or peaches back instead of the rocks they threw. Done that usually when camped alone. Never had one to get aggressive over me throwing things back at them, but I am pretty sure I never hit one either. I know I would have been PO'ed if one of their rocks had hit me, and I'll bet the booger would feel the same way. LOL
Sometimes after throwing fruit back instead of rocks, they quit throwing. The mornings after, sometimes the fruit was gone, but a lot of different critters could have had a midnight snack off of it.
I have never had a rock to hit me, my truck or trailer. I believe the critters are danged accurate with rocks, and could have done damage anytime they wanted to. Most of the time they have just tossed the rocks, rather than throwning them like a baseball pitcher. I think the rock throwing is just to let a person know they have company, and see what reaction the person will have.
When the critters have wanted me to leave an area, they usually begin by pushing down large dead trees, breaking big limbs and vocalizing. (When they start to hoot and grunt in anger like a large male gorilla and keep getting closer, that's the time to buy a ticket out of Dodge. LOL (Been there, done that, didn't enjoy it very much.)
One disclaimer. The black, shorter and stocky primates - especially those in Dallas, Lowndes and Winston counties - have a very nasty disposition. When they get all worked up about an intruder in their areas late in the afternoon or at night, they have been known to throw large sticks and rocks directly at people or at the hunting blinds they were in. These boogers are not afraid of gun fire either.
Just a few thoughts and opinions, for what they are worth.

Thank you all for responding. I'm gonna take some apples w/ me when I get a chance to stay the night. maybe even corncobs. I just bet they come off the mountains and feed in the many different corn fields & apple orchards in the valley here between the two mountain ranges.thank you again

| Last weekend at the outing. Gena was mentioning that she thought rocks were being thrown. (This was before Shasta's encounter with rocking throwing). Well dwells and I were between my tent and gena's and found a rock and I threw it. Nothing happened. But much later is when Shasta experienced the rock throwing.

Very good answers!
Hey Tal, You can add Franklin and Colbert County to the area where the ill-tempered ones are sometimes encountered that like to throw stuff at hunters.
And your description of how they announce that you've overstayed your welcome is very accurate. Been there, done that, didn't like it, and opened up a large can of "Gone" a few times also.
In Itawamba County, Mississippi, I had one throw a big stick at my brand new F250 pickup and put a dent in the right rear fender that cost me $700 to have pulled out by Dent Doctors. Couldn't hardly claim that on my insurance.
I also believe they can be very accurate when they want to. A friend and I were run out of an area on the Mescalero Apache Reservation northeast of Alamogordo, New Mexico, by softball to cantaloupe-sized rocks that started landing about 15ft in front of us and then kept landing 10 to 15 ft behind us as we were getting outta there. And they were coming from quite a distance away.
At one place I lived in Mississippi, they used to throw gravel (a few pieces at a time) up on the roof of my trailer. And they would occasionally bounce a pebble off the side of the trailer when I was outside doing something, just to get my attention.
But I never threw anything back at them.

You don't watch NCIS on television, do you? <G>

Seriously, I've not spent a lot of time in the woods, so I can't speak from personal experience. Besides the other replies posted here, I've read several accounts posted on forums {and mentioned on 'internet radio' BF shows} of people throwing things back into the woods. Most of the time, I don't think anything happens. But some times, something does happen. I think that occured during the recent Alabama outing broadcast live on CAMPFIRE SHADOWS.
'Nuff said.

Well to me you have to evaluate a few things. In our area where I feel we are "known" I have seen a small pebble land right in front of someones big toe and the general feeling was one of being played with. On another occassion me and Dan was slowing down to stop at our spot when "something" hit us pretty hard right below the outside rear view mirror.....safe to say....we did NOT stop there that night lol We have also been on an outing when pebbles were tossed gently in on us and we heard the pitter patter on the roof of the vehicle after Dan threw some out in the woods.
Last weekend the situation had several different factors to consider. No one had camped overnight at this location in 3 years...... only daytime traffic which was probably scarce. Pile in a bunch of people having a grand ole time and at the least the boogers are gonna be curious lol We have always felt that first night out they check you out, second night out they get a little more curious, third night out they want you gone which kinda held true to course last weekend lol The rocking had started I would say after it got dark. No calling had been allowed until this final night. Then some are on boats floating down the river and some was at camp and the calling was going back and forth. I would imagine if the boogers have ever heard the phrase......guests and fish stink after 3 days they would have heartily agreed lol
After we all got back is when I saw the rock that was lobbed into camp. Much later after the main body of the group had left our numbers were considerably deminished.........I think there was probably only 7 or 8 of us at camp which this group was split. Some was up in the pavilion area and the rest was at the campfire where I got rocked. It was evident that the rock encounters at this time was not very nice. Pat had said when they joined up with us that they were having large rocks thrown at them and of course I had that one throwed with considerable force to it. I at the time did not know that the other little group on up the hill was getting rocked like that lol I had done a call which I would not do again after that and at that particular point in time I would not have throwed anything back into the woods at them. Rule number one..........you CANNOT win a rock fight with a booger so don't even try lol My opinion is........they were ready for us to leave and was trying to scare us off but they also meant business too. It could have been worse than it was so I sure didn't want to antagonize them to a point that they felt they ought to kick it up a notch.........rocks hurt and there was plenty laying around for them to use lol So you have to evaluate each situation carefully and take into consideration how big the rocks are and how forceful they are being thrown etc Good rule would be.....if in doubt leave the rocks laying about lol

Hey frog,
As you can see from these wonderful and knowledgable members responses, no question is a dumb question. Your questions may even open up new insights into theories the rest of the members haven't thought about....or thought about in a long time - so ask as many as you want. Answers can't be found until the questions have been asked.........

Hey Frog , I have only encountered one throwing incident and that was on an outing in one of my sites .
Everything was normal with the outing and we ( My oldest son , his girlfriend, Charles and I ) were coming back to the camp when my oldest son and I were talking , I said something funny about him and he pushed me twice , when he did , this large stick came hurling out of the tree line and landed just a few feet from him in some palmetto bushes, at the same time he heard a growl come from the tree line . We knew we were being followed , which was normal BUT we sure didnt expect that lol .
I have always perceived that throwing of anything from the big guy is a sign of aggression , anger and their way of saying" hey get out of here " . You do have to examine the situation and listen to that inner voice .
I have been told by many that the reason for the stick being thrown was probably due to Timothy pushing me and the big guy didnt like it and was in some way protecting me ( your guess is as good as any ) .................Carolann

I heard a story that several teenagers were out riding around one night and decided to stop and take a break. They were all standing around talking and laughing and something threw half of a rabbit out in the road in the middle of them.
That brought and end to the party real fast.
This was on a dirt road..in the middle of no where.
Just proves that it may not be rocks that bust up a party..LOL
