Hi Dave, Was this sighting in Tipton county? I've been there before and it is a spooky/eerie place. Here's some history..... Reelfoot lake was formed in 1811-1812 by the largest earthquake known to have occured in North America. It is on the New Madrid fault. It was so severe that it fractured the earth's crust and made a huge crater. The hole was so large and deep that the Mississippi River flowed backwards for three days. It was reported that big aftershocks continued for nearly a year. It is in the extreme NW corner of the state of Tennessee. The area is covered in Bald Cypress trees and is one of the finest Crappie fishin holes around.Hope your nephew finishes his report soon. Can't wait to read it!--------TnC---------

thanks for the comeback...nephews hunting lodge is apparently right on the river..he said its in dryer county and touches lauderdale county...i've never been there yet but they big time duck hunters up there...now he says he has only one eye in the sky ..the other one looking for boogers...lol....cant blame him..hes 38 years old not one to stretch the truth..college grad has his own engineering business so hes very stable and woods savy......if he said it i believe it....i cant wait to go up there this winter with him ...they can duck hunt and i'll be on lookout for something else...he said the bf stood up and took about three strides and was gone...he said it looked to be maybe 6 ft. tall..but it was hard to judge height because nephew was sorta up on a swell..the booger was squated next to stump in a low spot....but he just now is able to tell folks about it..very cool...thanks and hollar at ya later on....bassdave

bassdave's gonna be goggle-eyed like a chameleon with one eye lookin up at the sky and the other scanning around lookin for boogers!    lol.

The only time I was ever at Reelfoot we were duck hunting, and it was before I started looking for BF, but I do remember what a spooky place it was.  I distinctly remember hoping that we wouldn't get lost back in that cypress swamp.  The guy running the boat had been there before, and I was REALLY hoping his memory was good.  It was overcast and we didn't have a compass.  It's one of those places that doesn't look like much on the map, but when you're there in it, it's LOTS bigger than you expected, especially when you're in a small boat, dodging logs, roots, limbs and cypress knees.

And BTW, they be LOTS of ducks there!

Reelfoot is indeed a duck hunters paradise lol I grew up hearing about the fishing, duck hunting and goose hunting down there from my brothers and brother in law. As a kid we all would head down to Reelfoot Lake to spend a Sunday swimming at what is called "the wash out".  It was the "in place" to be back in the day. Since we lived only 25 miles away it is a part of my childhood and adolecense memories. It is an area rich in history....in part because of the earthquake and also because of The Night Riders of Reelfoot Lake.

It is also know as the cottonmouth capital......they are there in hoards lol It is a very beautiful place and I am not surprized to hear of creatures being there at all.  I was there a few years back and enjoyed it immensely and found what I believe to be a track and a tree snap and took pictures of them.  I found what looked like a crossing and got out to look and found the track and the snap. This particular area is closed at dark and nobody is allowed back there, it is in the wildlife refuge in the Bessie Bend area. There is an observation post at the very back that would be ideal to go to late at night and listen but its one way in and one way out plus like I said they close the gate at dark so that isn't really an option.

The Dyer County area has the Obion River and the bottoms there and even though the 4 lane runs through it on the way to Dyersburg I do not like going through there late at night.  All down in there and on to Reelfoot should be a very active area if you know where to look. I will look forward to reading more about it Dave in the future!! Here are some pictures for yalls enjoyment!!

Wow!  Nice pics Shasta!  I've never seen it in the summer and it sure looks a LOT different all greened up.  Definitely boogery.  And you are right, it would be really cool to be out on that observation deck after dark.   But don't know how fun it would be walking back to the truck down that dark tunnel of foliage.

BTW, did you pick any of those muscadines in pic #11?

Nawwwwww Coonbo, I didn't pick any of the muscadines lol

I had a bunch more pixs I could have posted but figured those were enough lol As for the observation deck.............you have a cul de sac parking area......real nice and you walk up to the deck walk. Pix 7 was as I was walking out to the end of it and pix 8 is on the way back out lol I noticed that tunnel effect and thought the same thing lol Sure would hate to have walk through there late on a moonless night..........don't know if I would be more worried bout creatures or s things though..........like I said, its the cottonmouth capital........I mean really  lolol

Thank you Shasta for sharing your Reelfoot photos. The ones that I have are on 35 mm film and I don't own a scanner, so thanks again. I'm so glad you stepped up and did this cause in trying to describe this place in my above entry I knew my description did not do this wonderful place justice. Now everyone can see just how spooky and eerie this place is ! ! If some Spanish Moss were present many would think they were in the bayous of Louisiana. You are a fine photographer too!----TnC----

Thank yall and I am glad yall enjoyed the pixs. It is such a beautiful place there with so many photo ops available. The piers, Reelfoot Lake State park and the spillway. It also was the place to go eat fish too.....Blue Bank, Gooches and The Inn......don't know if they are still there but they were hot places as I remember them. The Lake isn't very deep at all and I used to hear folks say that you better not ever jump out of the boat or you would bury up in the silt and wouldn't be able to get out. I remember when I would be out on the lake in the fishing boat puting along that suddenly the boat would rise on one side as we would slowly go over a sumerged stump.....remnants of what used to be a forest before the earthquake and we would run over alot of them lol No fast moving boats are to be seen on the lake for that very purpose. Carl Perkins is from there too..........Tiptonville or T Town as the locals call it lol

Yes those are my big ole feet in the pix lol When taking pixs of tracks I always like to have something for size and sometimes I just use my feet.......kinda like one barefoot to another...I am an 8 1/2 lol As for the pedicure thing........I am a nail tech so.....yep lol

I found this pix of the spillway.......I for some reason loved this place as a kid lol It used to be completely lined with people fishing off of it and crowded all around the edges too and us kids would beg and plead for the adults to stop lol The other side of the spillway....the lake side is really pretty. If I find any other pretty pixs of the lake I will post them for yall.

They used to have dances at the round house there in the park but that was even before my time lol Reelfoot Lake used to be bumper to bumper traffic on weekends. There was Magnolia and Sunkist beaches at the washout and the place was packed..........sorrowfully......not anymore. On the other side of the washout at the time there were and are houses and they dumped their raw sewage into the water so it was closed down to the public long ago. They found cholera germs in the water or something like that. I have seen a handful of folks swimming and boating there but its basically all now privately owned all around the washout............a sad thing to me because I remember it in its heyday when I was a child.
