About two years ago, we were recording at the river. We parked with our vehicle backed up to a shallow inlet. The mosquitoes were fierce and the night was very still and humid. I put the bionic parabolic dish out my window facing behind us.We heard an owl close by for a bit then it flew off and distant coyotes. When it settled down and we had just crickets and frogs, I started hearing something moving slowly through the water. It would stop, then move a little, then stop again. We took our night visiion and looked back at the water behind us and saw nothing. The inlet had flooded a depression of large trees so we figured that if it was a bigfoot that it was hiding behind the trees. We continued to hear the movement in the water. Then we heard what sounded like whispering.  We listened to this for about 30 minutes, using the night vision and still not seeing anything. It sounded like it was saying the same thing over and over almost like a chant. It was unnerving. After losing two more pints to the mosquitos, we packed it up and left. Leaving out we panned the inlet with the car lights and saw nothing yet again.

About a month later, I recorded the same sound again from my bathroom window at home. I suspected it might be some kind of insect or frog but I have not ever recorded such a sound before or since. Take a listen and let me know what you think. If you know what it is, please let me know. Thanks.

7fireflies,

I am not a bio acoustic professional in any way, but I did manage to isolate the sound you are talking about.  The whispering sound takes place 17 seconds into the recording.  I removed much of the higher pitched sounds such as the static and crickets.  I used the graphic equalizer on Microsoft Media to do this.  It does sound like whispering to me also.  The first sounds you hear are rythmic with two sounds.  It sounds like "hwa hwa" in the beginning of the recording, but at the 17 second mark in the recording there is a distinct difference in the sound.  The are 5 seperate sounds patterns that sound like sylables.

I am not going to say what it sounds like to me, but let others listen and and see if they hear what I am hearing.

Below is an image of the settings I have on Microsoft Media Player.  Adjust the graphic equalizer to these settings and listen atthe 17 second part of the recording.

Hi Gigantotejano ,  I did everything to the recording that you described but I guess I listened to way too much Zeppelin as a teen.I fear it has damaged my eardrums.I hear the "hwa hwa" sounds and I hear some short staccato sounds but I'm unable to decipher it. I do hear a melodic whistle. Sounds too perfect and unfamiliar to be a bird. I set my graphic equalizer just as you did. I'll try again later. For some reason, my hearing is as good as it gets in the early am and I'm not sure why. Thanks for the instruction and the description that you gave. I'm sure 7 FF's will be proud of your help.----------TennesseeCherokee-------------

I am very proud of his help but I will have to download the program before I can try it. I will do that first chance I get. Thanks for taking a look at this for me. I have lots of interesting recordings but very few folks say much about them and I thought this one was deleted. I guess Mike deleted a different one. Oh Goodness!:)

7fireflies,

I don't know how I missed commenting on this, but this is fantastic! I hear (using headphones) strange sounding voices and I also hear "yelling" for lack of a better word.   If you could get the hissing filtered from this, I would say this is something very unusual and important that you recorded.

Can Mike (when he's feeling better) work on this for you?

Here is the same recording with a compressor and dual filter applied to mask the insects and frogs.  You may get a little more of the sounds in question.

You may have to turn your speakers up.  If you think the recording is too soft, just let me know and I'll fix it.  My speakers on my computer are pretty large ;)

This is VEERRRRY Interesting!   I can definitely hear the chanting whisper.  Pretty eerie.  I would very much like to know what Luke thinks it is.  Same as TNC, I played WAY too  much Zeppelin, Def Leppard, Skynerd, Almans, AC/DC, Stones and others WAY too loud.  Plus been in two high pressure steam line explosions, ruptured my eardrums shooting wild dogs in our barn with a .300 Win Mag, and was in a building that our USAF accidentally bombed and blew away.  Am 85% deaf in right ear and 15 to 20% deaf in my left ear, and they ring like crazy all the time....   Am lucky to have ANY hearing left.
