I posted this at Stan's and thought I'd put it out here for you folks....

Does anyone have any thoughts on how a cricket could be responsible for this recording. A couple of weeks ago I left this recording package out overnight about 4 feet from where I have been leaving food and having it taken on a regular basis. This time the food was untouched but there was the sound of something messing with the mic occasionally and moving around all night long. The recording package did not appear to have been moved.

At several points this "cricket" sound appears on the recording doing some "uncricketlike" things. Here's an example from about 4:30 am.

wow. referring to a discussion some folks had a while back about how the woods is like the boogers home and they can tell if anything is different, that is noticeable. For those wondering, they were talking about if somebody changed something in your house, you would notice and so do the boogers with there "house".

So the way it looks in that photo its out in the open and its new, he's gonna mess with it. Just my opinion. But maybe the cricket walked on it and made some of the noise? It liked the warmth? I'm just guessing.

By the way, I freaking hate crickets so it took all my will to listen to it. Made my hubby tear apart the bedroom just to find one and stop the horrid noise, lol.

To me there was definitely something moving around the mic - sounded like it had some size to it, but how large, I can't even guess.  Also the tempo of the cricket sound kept changing, faster and slower. At one point it even stopped altogether and then started again, with a diffent tempo.  It seemed to be moving closer , then farther away from the mic, judging by the changes in volume levels.  Interesting recording.  I've never heard a cricket sound quite like that before.

Well, what caught my attention was the fact that it was moving and chirping at the same time. As far as I know, a cricket can't do that. He has to stay in one spot and rub his hind legs together. Pretty neat trick.

Dave,

I'm glad you posted that finally. When you told me about it a couple of weeks ago

I thought it was pretty interesting. That "cricket" sure does have heavy steps.

Wow! That cricket has big feet! Seriously, I thought the cricket sounded normal. I don't think a cricket moving over the mic was responsible for the louder sounds. You could hear the ground crunching under the footsteps. Crickets can adjust the "volume" of their chirps, and the "distance" effect might have been the cricket turning away from the mic. I'd guess whatever was making the louder sounds was a few feet away from the cricket. Crickets will usually quiet when they sense something directly over them, although recently matured crickets can be pretty persistent in their chirping!

Raymisty, you'd hate my house! Some of my reptiles are cricket-eaters, so I buy crickets 1000 at a time. I keep them in a big plastic tub in my living room. Since I buy them half-grown, we usually get about two weeks of quiet, then the chorus starts up, and it's chirpchirpchirpchirpchirpchirpchirp all night for a month! I like it. It's sounds like the outdoors. Oddly, 1000 chirping crickets is less annoying than one hiding out and serenading you all night.
