For the background story, go to my blog entry at http://escapees-hideaway.blogspot.com/2008/07/unidentified-vocalization-recorded-on.html.

The loud noise in question came from ground level in the lot east of our host's house.  My family and I (6 in total) were at the front of the house while the homeowner and investigator with his recording equipment was on the trail in the woods back behind these lots.  The investigator pulled the unidentified loud noise from his 2-1/2 hour recording made on-site that evening and posted the audio clip at http://www.stancourtney.com/sounds/07.12.08_1.mp3.

We know it doesn't sound like the typical noises made by an animal.  We presume this loud vocalization is an imitated sound, but are not sure exactly what is being mimicked.

Has something sounding like this been witnessed by anyone reading this forum?

That sound is sure interesting. I have never heard anything exactly like that. Some fireworks are similar. I have also heard some pressure relief valves or pop-off valves as some call them make similar sounds.

Keep us posted if this is figured out.

Much appreciated if someone had some idea what this sound is.  As EscAPEe wrote, its most puzzling.

It does sound mechanical-ish.  But I asked those who were there as witnesses and they said there were no noticable gas pipes, machinery, etc. in that area where the sound appeared to originate.  Witnesses said it was very loud -way too loud for any reptile, amphibian or bird.

You can read discussion about it at  http://www.stancourtney.com/    Look in the "Sounds" forum and there are 2 threads.  1)  "Fireworks at Pixie's Place" and 2) "Unusual Calls."

Thanks.

I remember hearing something similar when married to a "driller" and we spent time at the oil rig.  Any rig folks out there that might recognize this sound?

The sound appears to be that of one or more nesting herons. There was a large group of the birds nesting on the point between the two prongs of Iron Fork Lake near Mena, AR a few years ago when I was investigating reports of BF around the lake. The first night I walked into the nesting area, the birds started making the sounds. The sounds brought me to a screeching halt for a minute or two until I used a bright spotlight and found the birds in the tops of trees. Some weird sounds for sure.

I'm not sure at all. I'd like to have a copy of this to listen to more closely. I think it might actually be two separate sources. The "hissing" sound, and a bird reacting to whatever it was, but I'm not sure at all.

Sounded to me like there was a pattern to the hissing and the chirp sounds.  Pepeating over and over, like a cycle.  I'm stumped.

Not positive, but sounds to me like a push lawn mower starting up over and over.

OklahomaSquatch,

I have to agree about the sound as "birdlike" but was it a bird or something imitating a bird?  The landowner has a history of sightings on the property and that particular day several people were walking the area.  Could they have accidentally gotten too close to something out in the brush?  Maybe, and if others had heard what I heard, at first listen, what came to my mind was oil well, except the "oil well" moved around and fast.  We may never know for sure, but I would hope that the recording gets analyzed and tested.

Our host witness told me that he had seen a large shadow on the trail we just came out of.

The source of the sound was large, it was not a frog or bird.  It was large enough that being in the dark I was not prepared to charge into the brush to investigate.

I was speaking last week to an investigator from Colorado and he said that the sound was very similar to what he had heard in Southern Colorado.

I am not prepared to say what I think it was but I doubt very much that anyone can come up with a adequate explanation or a similar recording.  It was great that escAPEe was there with his family to witness it also.

I am open to suggestions.

I have no idea about this sound. If you find any info on this..keep us posted.

Did I see in a chat someplace where you got a H2 Zoom Recorder?

Yes, I picked up a H2 Zoom Recorder.  I get requests from people wanting to know what lower priced recorder to buy.  Many people are saying good things about the H2 so I got one so I could give an educated recommendation.

I am going to do some comparison studies with it and will post the results.

As some of the folks know I retired last August but am working part-time now delivering motorhomes nationwide. I tow my little car and that is how I get in my squatchin.

I am also working on my 48 in 08 project of squatchin all 48 states in 2008.  I have about 11 posted on my website at  http://www.stancourtney.com/.

I do not have Alabama signed up for yet if someone wants to volunteer.

Thanks,   Stan

Last weekend the homeowner heard what sounded like someone using a string trimmer (aka, a Weed Eater) back in the woods behind his house.  It was dark, around 8:45pm, on a Sunday night.  He slipped out the front door of his house and cut an 'L' shape path to the back of his shed staying out of the street light to see if he could catch whoever it was.  He reports that he caught a glimpse of what was making the sound-- it was a BF creature with female physical traits (how else can I mention mammaries here?) sitting on the ground near the woodline.  She turned and headed back into the woods.  In a sitting position, the top of her head came up as tall as he is (around 6 feet).  He fled back inside his house to compose himself.  About an hour later he set an audio recorder and microphone out on his front steps but didn't hear the sound again that night.  The next morning he investigated this location and found a posterior impression in the dirt and a new path pushed through the brush back into the woods.

I asked him how the "weed eater" sound he heard on August 17 compared with the unusual noise Stan recorded back on July 12.  He listened to the recording again and replied that it had a similar mechanical run-up and displayed the same volume-- but not the squeak at the end of each phrase.

I'm asking folks to listen to the audio clip Stan captured on July 12 if you haven't done so already.  Have you heard anything like this in or around your research areas?  It is certainly not a typical vocalization one would associate with BF creatures-- yet it was witnessed a month later in the same vicinity this time in conjunction with a sighting.
