(Based on the history of sightings in this general area, you can imagine anything 'unusual' puts us on edge).
Saturday night my girlfriend, her brother, and myself returned to her grandparents' house near 10:30pm. As soon as her bro opened the door, he heard a knocking sound. We all went silent and listened for a minute. It sounded like something hitting a tree with a large stick or other object. From inside the car with one door opened, it sounded as if it were coming a couple of hundred yards down a wooded valley near the edge of the property. As I got out of the car to listen better, the sound seemed to be MUCH closer than previously thought. I went back to the car to get my flashlight. I looked all in the direction of the sound but didn't see anything unusual. Her brother suggested it might be the electric fence having problems. I shined the light on a nearby tree and noticed a box attached to that tree. I moved closer to it; and we discovered the source of the sound. An electric fence connector box gone haywire. My gf would NOT get out of the car until we determined the cause.
So, if you hear knocking and you're unsure what it is or where its coming from, consider whether an electric fence is nearby and make sure you can rule that out as the cause.
Great advice for sure! I think the biggest challenge many have is not even noticing that there is activity attached to the sound - the sound of wood knocking is similar to hammering - and it's such a common sound that most never even notice it... until they consider BF - and then the location of the knocking can be unnerving - for me I've heard for years but when I went to find its source it was way back in the swamp - no one building back there!
I'm sure folks who hear it at night next to their home will look for a cause but most never even think about it.
Glad you found a box and not an angry uninvited guest!
