The RFP Research Project (RFPRP) – Report of Encounter

Date Report Submitted to the RFPRP:  May 26, 2008
Date of Encounter: Summer of 2005
Time of Incident:  About 30 minutes after full darkness. (“About dark thirty”.)
Weather Conditions: Clear, warm, still with a moon that was full or near full.
State: Alabama
County: Clarke
Nearest City or Town: The incident occurred in the very small Community of Rockville.
Location: A few yards north of County Road #15 (Rockville Road) on an unpaved road called Reedy Creek Road and beside the Rockville Baptist Church.  (Some maps show that the road the girls were on is either Society Hill Road or connects to it as an extension.)
Nearest highway or road: As shown above.
General Land Use Description: Pine timber production.
General Terrain Description: Rolling hills of old beach sand that drop off into the Tombigbee River basin and the Alabama River basin to the south.
Nearest Lakes or Streams: The Tombigbee River is about four miles southwest of the sighting location, and the Alabama River is about six miles to the southeast. There are oxbow lakes, marshes, creeks and swamps throughout the general area south of the sighting location.
Witness Profile: The witness is a 16 year old female who was 13 at the time of the encounter.
Activities of Witness Prior to Encounter/Incident:  She was walking with two other girls about her same age from one of the girls’ home to the home of the other. They had just turned north off of Highway #15 onto Reedy Creek Road which runs generally north. The road passes within a few yards of the west side of the Rockville Baptist Church. Reedy Creek Road is paved for a few yards as it leaves County Road #15.
Details of Encounter / Incident: As the girls passed the church building, they saw the back side of a human-like form squatted down near a large propane tank on the church property. The area and the adjoining church parking lot were illuminated by “night-watcher” mercury vapor lights, one of which was only about five yards behind the squatted and hunched creature. The witness stated she got the impression the creature was eating something that was being picked up off the ground.
Within seconds, the creature stood up on two feet and turned its upper body and head toward the girls who were about 15 yards from it. The animal immediately turned and began to run to its right to go around the end of the propane tank. It then turned toward the northwest and ran into the timber.
Description of the Animal: The witness stated the animal was about eight feet tall and covered in dark colored hair. She said the hair on the body and head appeared to be about one and one-half inches long. She stated there was bare skin showing on the creature’s face below the eyes. She saw that its head had a pronounced brow ridge. She said that she noticed that the head seemed small for the size of the animal’s upper torso which she described as large and wide. She stated that the animal appeared to have no neck and, “Its head stuck out of its body like a little tick”. She saw no ears.
She explained that although the animal’s body was large, it did not appear to have a massive (heavily muscled) body. She stated the upper torso tapered only slightly to the waist, and the girth of the legs and arms seemed in proportion to the rest of the body. When asked, she said she could plainly see that the animal had no breasts, and she was sure it was a male although she could not see genitalia.
She particularly noticed that the creature’s arms were very long as compared to a human body. She also said that the animal’s legs were long in proportion to the rest of the body.
She said that she was amazed at the speed in which the animal ran from the area. She said that its stride was long and fluid, and that its arms were swinging in long and exaggerated arcs as it ran.
Photos or Drawings Made? No.
Description of Related Sounds: None heard.
Description of Related Scents / Odors: None noted.
Historical Notes: There have been several reports of the sighting of similarly described animals in this particular area. Two of those reports involve night time road crossing sightings of such animals on County Road #15 about one mile from this encounter location.
