The RFP Research Project (RFPRP) Report of Encounter & Follow-Up Investigation

Date report submitted to RFPRP: 08/31/2007.

Date of encounter: 08/31/2007.

Preface: One of the primary witnesses (Mr. A) contacted a member of the RFPRP during the time of the incident. This member drove to the site and arrived in time to hear some of the vocalizations that were apparently being made by the creature that had been seen, although the sounds ceased shortly after he arrived. The next day this RFPRP investigator contacted one of the other area Researchers who met with and interviewed Mr. A during the first week of September. That interview was tape recorded. The two researchers compiled and submitted this report of the encounter.

Time of incident: Early evening until about 3:00am.

Weather conditions: Clear and hot with a partial moon.

State: Alabama.

County: Cullman.

Nearest City or Town: Cullman.

Location: Not disclosed at the request of the witnesses.

Nearest Highway or Road: State Highway #69.

General land use and description: Numerous chicken farms intermingled with cotton and hay farms, single-family residences and timberlands.

General Terrain description: There are some slightly rolling hills in the immediate area with a well known creek running through them. Even though this area is well populated, the general sighting location has little human traffic through it. The cotton and hay fields surround a thickly wooded area. Timber consists mostly of pines with some gum trees. There is a high tension power line that passes through the area.

Nearest Lakes or streams: The information is withheld at the request of the witnesses.

Witness profile: There were two primary witnesses to these events; Mr. “A” and his son. Mr. A is in his 30’s and his son is in his late teens. Both are familiar with the typical wildlife in the State.

Activities of witnesses prior to the encounter: Mr. A and his son, along with a married couple who are friends of the son, were individually riding four-wheel ATVs in the area. They were riding small trails and farm roads which mostly traversed open fields and cut-overs bordered by timber land.

Details of encounter/incident: The “four wheelers” were heading in a southwesterly direction in the clear cut section below the high voltage power lines. It was at least 200 hundred yards to the nearest road in the direction which they were heading. Mr. A’s son noticed something moving in the woods beside them. He slowed his vehicle and told Mr. A to watch the area. Mr. A soon noticed the movement of a large bipedal figure running in the wood line. Mr. A told his son to stay in the middle of the group and keep going. He wanted to lead the group away from the area without alarming the couple.

The small band of four wheelers kept a slow pace and Mr. A did not try to make them go any faster. As they traversed the next two hundred yards Mr. A and his son saw the creature cross in front of them in the clear-cut on two occasions. Mr. A could not tell if the creature was stalking them or trying to get away.

After crossing the road they continued through the cut-over and could see the creature staying with them until they entered an open field. It was at this time that they saw the creature go around some chicken houses and cross another road into a wooded area. At that time they begin to hear vocalizations from the wooded area which they believed were being made by the creature they had seen. They stayed in the area and continued to hear what they described as whooping sounds and later a screaming sound like a woman in pain or distress. (The chicken houses are owned by Mr. A’s brother so they were able to stay on his property for as long as they chose to do so.)

Description of the Animal: The witnesses stated that Mr. A’s son had the best look at the creature but both agreed the animal was about 7 feet tall, covered in dark brown hair and was at all times running on two feet. Bare footprints that were later found indicated the creature’s feet were about 12" in length. Both primary witnesses stated they saw the animal’s eyes reflecting light from the ATV’s headlight, and both agreed the reflected color was yellow with some greenish tint.

The men were unable to distinguish facial features, length of arms, or other physical features because of the nighttime lighting conditions.

Photos or drawings made: None.

Description of related sounds: As described above.

Historical notes: Mr. A stated that on several occasions he has heard the same type sounds as described in this report coming from the woods behind his own residence which is approximately one mile from the area of this encounter.

Additional Details & Comments: Mr. A stated that every time they heard the creature the sounds would cause chills to run through him and his son. Mr. A also stated that at one time the same type sounds appeared to be coming from two different locations. He had planned to camp out in this area, but after hearing the sounds for an extended period, he decided not to do so. Neither he nor his son have been back in the woods since the incident. The two witnesses and the writers intend to conduct further surveillance and research in the area as soon as possible.

This area is not one that the area researchers would consider to be prime habitat for these creatures. However, the location is relatively close to an area in adjoining Morgan County which has produced recent sighting reports, one of which is published on this web site. The researchers believe that further research in this general area is warranted, and that research should include interviews with the local residents. Mr. A’s willingness to talk candidly about the encounter is refreshing and somewhat unusual. The researchers found no reason to question the truthfulness of his account of this encounter. He is very anxious to find out what he encountered and is willing to assist in additional research and investigations to that end. He is a respected member of his community and his profession.
